Hungary's Constitutional Court Will Review the Legality of the President's Suspension
On August 17, the Constitutional Court of Hungary will review the constitutional amendments that led to the early termination of President Tamás Szujók’s term of office.
The court will also review provisions limiting the term of office for members of parliament to 12 years and requiring Constitutional Court justices to retire at age 70.
Opposition lawmakers believe that the procedure for adopting the amendment regarding the president violated legislative requirements and are demanding its repeal. At the same time, the Constitutional Court can only review the procedural aspects of the amendments, not their substance.
Earlier, Shuyok also appealed to the court to terminate his powers, but the case was not heard because seven of the 15 judges recused themselves.
