Kwofie Calls for Ghanaian Knowledge to Be Included in AI Data — MyJoyOnline
In Ghana, Professor Samuel Kodjo Kwofie, director of the Institute of Applied Science and Technology at the University of Ghana, called on publishers to include indigenous knowledge systems in the data used to train artificial intelligence models. The role of AI in publishing
Kwofie spoke as an invited reviewer at the presentation of I. K. Appiah's book The Book Industry Programme in Ghana: From Dream to Reality and Beyond. The event took place at the National Theatre in Accra as part of the 23rd Ghana International Book Fair in 2026.
The scholar called on industry representatives to use emerging AI technologies by combining them with Ghanaian knowledge systems and locally developed solutions. According to him, artificial intelligence is already affecting various stages of the publishing process through automation and digitalization.

At the same time, the professor stressed that AI should not replace human creativity and responsibility in the publishing industry. He noted that issues of ethics, plagiarism, and cognitive property should be at the core of creative writing. In Kwofie's view, AI can improve efficiency, reduce production time, assist with content creation, and simplify certain publishing processes, but it cannot replace authors and publishers.
A book on publishing education
The professor described the publication as a strategic resource for Ghana's publishing industry that can create opportunities for networking, knowledge development, and professional growth. The book covers the nearly 40-year development of the book publishing programme at the Department of Publishing Studies of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
The book's author, I. K. Appiah, is a senior lecturer at the Department of Publishing Studies, Faculty of Art, College of Art and Built Environment at the university. The publication was issued by Adwinsa Publication (GH) Ltd. Kwofie also noted that books can increasingly be created, distributed, and read digitally when appropriate devices are available.
