The National Archives of Latvia has transferred to Ukraine a collection of historical documents of Ukrainian origin that were discovered during research into Latvian archival holdings.
These materials originate from the territory of modern-day Ukraine and date from the second half of the 19th century to the first half of the 20th century. Among them are:
reports and records
parish registers
blueprints for places of worship
community documents from various regions
In particular, the materials pertain to the territories of the modern-day Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, Odesa, and Volyn regions.
According to archivists, these materials were removed or transferred outside Ukraine during and after World War II, when there was a mass relocation of archival collections across Europe.
The transfer of the documents took place in accordance with international principles for the preservation of cultural heritage and within the framework of cooperation between Ukraine and Latvia in the field of archival affairs.
The Ministry of Justice emphasized that the return of these archival materials serves as an example of international cooperation in the cultural sphere, the restoration of historical justice, and the preservation of Ukraine’s documentary heritage.
The transferred documents will enable a better study of the history of Ukrainian communities and the processes of archive relocation during wartime.
This was reported by the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine.
