Lithuania wants to seek compensation from Russia for damage to its embassy in Kyiv
Lithuania is considering seeking compensation from Russia for damage caused to its embassy in Kyiv as a result of Russian missile strikes. Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys stated that the legal mechanisms for such compensation exist, at least in theory.
According to him, the extent of the damage has yet to be assessed by experts.
“All of this will need to be assessed. I would like to point out that Lithuania is very actively advocating for the creation of international legal mechanisms that would allow for the assessment, documentation, and collection of compensation for damages caused on Ukrainian territory. A Register of Damages has already been established, and now a commission to review claims has been set up, with the Republic of Lithuania being one of the first to join. Such theoretical possibilities exist. “It is possible to claim compensation for damaged property,” Budris told reporters at the Seimas on Monday.
“I still need to carefully examine from a legal standpoint exactly how this will work in the case of diplomatic property. The principle itself is quite clear: regardless of whether a window was broken, a roof was blown off, or other property was damaged, nothing should go unreported. Compensation will have to be collected for all of this damage,” he said, according to the Delfi news portal.
As a reminder, Lithuania plans to acquire technology that will help border guards more effectively detect underground tunnels used for illegally crossing the state border.
