Le Pen announced her intention to run for president of France
Marine Le Pen, the de facto leader of the French right-wing populist party “National Rally,” has stated that she intends to run in the presidential election, if the appeals court rules in her favor in the case involving the fictitious employment of her assistants in the European Parliament.
According to Le Pen, she is prepared to run only on the condition that the court’s decision no longer restricts her right to stand for election.
“I don’t see myself as a candidate wearing an electronic ankle monitor,” Le Pen emphasized.
She explained that a presidential candidate must have complete freedom of movement and not be dependent on court permissions.
“If you are a presidential candidate, you must have complete freedom of movement… I cannot be dependent on court permissions just to go to a meeting or to the market,” the politician stated.
As a reminder, a court previously found Marine Le Pen guilty in a case involving the fictitious hiring of assistants in the European Parliament and barred her from holding elected office. She is currently appealing that verdict.
If the appeals court overturns the restrictions, Le Pen plans to run in the next presidential election in France.
She announced this on a French television channel.
