Liberia has agreed to accept up to 1,200 people deported from the United States

Liberia has agreed to accept up to 1,200 people whom the U.S. will transport to a third country over the next 12 months. The first group of 20 people is expected to arrive in the country on Thursday, according to Deutsche Welle, citing a statement from the Liberian government.

Liberian authorities stated that they will accept citizens or nationals of African and Western Hemisphere countries who are medically cleared to travel. They will be accepted as guests: they will be able to leave Liberia at any time or apply for asylum.

The Liberian government stated that the agreement with the U.S. does not provide for direct compensation or reciprocal obligations. At the same time, the country is to receive support for implementing the program and generally strengthening its immigration system. Details of this assistance have not been disclosed.

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is concluding agreements with African countries regarding the admission of people whom Washington cannot legally return to their countries of origin. In particular, this applies to cases where U.S. courts determine that deportation could expose individuals to the risk of torture or other cruel treatment.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, Ghana, and Sierra Leone have already signed similar agreements with the U.S. There is currently no information available on the specific nationalities of the people who will be deported to Liberia.
