The Iranian president's plane made an emergency landing due to air defense activity
The plane carrying Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who was returning from an official visit to Kyrgyzstan, made an emergency landing in the city of Rasht. The landing was caused by the activation of air defense systems.
Pezeshkian had been in Bishkek, where he participated in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit on September 1. After the events concluded, he set off back to Iran. At that time, air defense systems were activated in the eastern part of Tehran. Against this backdrop, the president’s plane, which was supposed to arrive in the capital, was diverted to another airport. The Iranian news agency Mehr reported on the air defense activity.
As a result of the route change, Pezeshkian’s plane landed in Rasht, the administrative center of Gilan Province. There were no reports of injuries among the president or members of his delegation.
At the same time, the exact reason why the plane was unable to land in Tehran has not been officially disclosed. Iranian media confirmed the activation of air defense systems and the rerouting of the plane, while Israeli Channel 12 reported specifically on the emergency landing.
The incident occurred amid a new escalation between Iran and the United States. On September 1, the United States carried out strikes on Iranian military targets, including air defense systems, radars, and communications centers. In response, Iran attacked U.S. military targets in the region.
Pezeshkian himself stated the day before that Tehran is ready to resume compliance with the agreements with Washington if the U.S. also fulfills its obligations under the June memorandum.
