Lithuanian Social Democrats are ending their alliance with the far-right party

The Lithuanian Social Democratic Party has decided to end its coalition partnership with the far-right political party “Zorya Neman,” led by Remigijus Žemaitis. The decision was made on Saturday. Thus, the Social Democrats intend to terminate the coalition agreement with a party that has repeatedly found itself at the center of public and political controversies.

On June 6, the Social Democrats decided to terminate the coalition agreement with “Zorya Neman.”

The party stated that, given the public statements and political moves by "Zorya Neman" leader Remigijus Žemaitaitis and the tension that has begun to arise, "the current format of the coalition no longer meets the standards of political trust and responsibility."

116 out of 120 members of the party council voted in favor of the changes to the coalition; only one voted against, and three abstained.

They also decided to begin discussions on a new governing majority with the “For Lithuania” Democratic Union.

Mindaugas Sinkevičius, leader of the Lithuanian Social Democrats, noted that they had three options: maintain the status quo, remain in a minority government, or pursue a restructuring. "I asked the council to support the scenario of change because I believe this is the right path for the party and for the country—to change the composition of the current coalition and invite the Union of Democrats 'For the Sake of Lithuania.'

Following the Social Democrats’ decision, Žemaitaitis stated that he feels “more relief than disappointment” and that this comes as no surprise to him.

This was reported by LRT.
