Lithuania May Replace Lomonosov with Shevchenko in the School Curriculum — Delfi
Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius proposed revising the school curriculum to remove the works of Russian writer Mikhail Lomonosov, and instead include the works of Taras Shevchenko in the list of recommended reading.
According to the head of the Lithuanian government, schoolchildren should not learn about patriotism and citizenship through the works of authors whose writing is associated with Russian imperial ideology. He believes that the works of Taras Shevchenko will help young people better understand Ukrainian culture, history, and national identity.
Sinkevičius appealed to the Ministry of Education, Science, and Sports with a proposal to review the general education curricula approved in 2022.
After their adoption, criticism arose in Lithuania over the list of recommended literature. In particular, opponents pointed out that the curricula included more Russian authors than before, while Ukrainian literature was overlooked.
The Ministry of Education had previously emphasized that studying the works of Russian writers is not mandatory, and that teachers are free to choose literature by authors from other countries.
