Kaduna governor approves ₦3.659 billion for pension payments — Premium Times Nigeria

In Nigeria’s Kaduna State, Governor Uba Sani has approved ₦3.659 billion for the payment of pensions, gratuities and benefits to the families of deceased civil servants. According to Premium Times Nigeria, the funds are intended for 1,339 beneficiaries under two pension schemes.

Allocation of funds

Commissioner for Information and Culture Ahmed Maiyaki said that ₦515 million is to be received by 210 local government pensioners under the defined benefit scheme. Another ₦3.144 billion has been allocated for 1,129 beneficiaries under the contributory pension scheme.

According to Maiyaki, since May 2023, the Sani administration has allocated a total of ₦21.455 billion for pension payments. These funds, he said, have covered 9,683 pensioners and eligible family members.

Pension and education measures

The state government said the funding is part of reforms in public financial management. Their stated aim is to settle outstanding pension obligations and create a more predictable system for future payments. Maiyaki stressed that pension payments are an obligation to pensioners and the families of deceased civil servants.

The statement also refers to the state’s education reforms. Deputy Governor Hadiza Balarabe announced stronger education quality control in 23 local government areas. Abubakar Usman Zaria, director of the School Quality Assurance Authority, said the agency had deployed 50 motorcycles in these areas for field workers.
