Turkey’s First Lady Emine Erdoğan speaks at climate events in New York — Anadolu Agency

Turkey’s First Lady Emine Erdoğan took part in a series of events in New York, United States, dedicated to protecting children in the digital environment, climate change and sustainable development. She accompanied Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during his visit to the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Anadolu Agency reports.

Climate and circular economy

The first event attended by Emine Erdoğan was the opening of New York Climate Week, whose main partners included Türkiye’s Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change and the Zero Waste Foundation. In her speech, she described climate change as one of the most visible consequences of the burden human activity places on the planet.

Erdoğan said the Zero Waste movement transforms people from passive observers of the climate crisis into participants in the search for solutions. She stressed the need to develop infrastructure for the reuse and repair of products, circular production technologies and international cooperation.

At the International Energy Agency’s High-Level Dialogue on Energy Transition, she mentioned record temperatures, forest fires, floods and storms. According to her, Türkiye ranks fifth in Europe and 11th in the world in installed renewable energy capacity. The country plans to increase its installed solar and wind generation capacity to 120 gigawatts by 2035.

Children’s safety in the digital environment

Emine Erdoğan also attended an event on safe digital systems for children, organized under her patronage jointly with Türkiye’s Ministry of Family and Social Services, UNICEF and the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative on Violence Against Children.

She called for children’s safety to be built into the design of digital systems rather than added later as an additional feature. Türkiye’s first lady also advocated developing common international standards under UN auspices, regularly monitoring their implementation and strengthening the accountability of technology companies and digital platforms.

In New York, Erdoğan held meetings with Rosângela Lula da Silva, the wife of Brazil’s president; Fatima Maada Bio, the wife of Sierra Leone’s president; Rachel Ruto, the wife of Kenya’s president; and Jeffrey Sachs, president of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network.
