Lithuania begins implementing Ukrainian drone detection system SkyFortress — RMF24

Lithuania has begun the pilot implementation of the SkyFortress system for airspace monitoring. The Ukrainian-developed solution detects drones by acoustic and radio signals, RMF24 reports.

Detection by acoustic and radio signals

According to Lithuania’s Ministry of Defence, the system, which uses artificial intelligence, can detect and track low-flying unmanned aerial vehicles or cruise missiles. SkyFortress identifies objects in real time by the acoustic or electromagnetic traces they leave behind.

Lithuanian Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas said that the country is adapting systems already operating in Ukraine instead of creating them from scratch. According to him, SkyFortress complements the surveillance stage in the air defence chain — from airspace monitoring to the interception and neutralization of aerial threats.

Testing before full deployment

The agreement concluded in the summer also provides for the analysis of sensor data, the use of digital databases of sound signatures and radio frequencies compiled on the basis of open data, as well as personnel training. The system must undergo testing before full deployment.

In recent months, Lithuania has repeatedly reported a possible aerial threat amid the armed aggression of the Russian Federation — an aggressor state — against Ukraine. In September, a drone that violated Lithuanian airspace was shot down over the country’s territory for the first time. Similar incidents had previously also been recorded in Latvia and Estonia.
