The IAEA warns of an increased risk of a nuclear disaster

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated that the risk of a nuclear disaster has now risen to levels not seen since the height of the Cold War. He emphasized the importance of this discussion during the conference on the review of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, currently taking place in New York.

He wrote about this on social media.

Grossi noted that the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty has been in force for over five decades and has the broadest membership of any treaty in this field, uniting 191 countries—both those that possess nuclear weapons and those that do not—under a shared responsibility.

“This is a very special moment. The risk of a nuclear catastrophe has risen to levels not seen since the height of the Cold War. War has returned to Europe and the Middle East, and the multilateral mechanisms that ensure peace and security are under enormous pressure. In today’s nuclear landscape, we are facing an unstable lull, with more actors, more risks, and less clarity,” the Director General emphasized.

Rafael Grossi also noted that nuclear science and technology bring significant benefits to humanity and should be accessible to a wider audience, and thanks to the Agency’s activities, these benefits contribute to energy and food security, public health, and environmental protection worldwide.

The 2026 Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons will take place from April 27 to May 22, 2026, in New York.
