Malema and Hill-Lewis clash over corruption allegations — TimesLIVE

In South Africa, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema and Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Geordin Hill-Lewis clashed during a leadership debate organized by Arena Holdings. Malema rejected claims that the EFF is corrupt, while Hill-Lewis accused the party of destabilizing coalitions and being involved in misconduct.

Malema’s position

As TimesLIVE reports, Malema said that since the EFF was founded, none of its members or leaders has been convicted or charged with corruption in connection with holding office. He called on opponents to provide evidence and referred to the work of the party’s representatives in Ekurhuleni, Tshwane, Johannesburg and the Gauteng government.

According to Malema, critics consider the EFF an unacceptable coalition partner because they cannot control the party. He also said allegations of chaotic governance are unfounded and conceal racism.

Accusations from the DA

Hill-Lewis said the DA must prevent parties such as the EFF from coming to power because, in his view, they cause instability in coalitions. He also mentioned high crime rates in communities and Malema’s conviction for discharging a firearm in a public place, calling such behavior irresponsible for a political leader.

The DA leader accused Malema of being deeply involved in the theft of hundreds of millions of rand from elderly women in Limpopo province in the VBS case. He also claimed that EFF leaders live in luxury they cannot explain through their incomes. Malema called these accusations pathetic, denied the EFF’s involvement in the VBS case and said Parliament had cleared him of allegations in matters related to the scandal.
