During her visit to the capital, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, together with Deputy Prime Minister for Ukraine’s Recovery Oleksiy Kuleba, visited Lukyanivka, which had suffered the consequences of a massive Russian attack. The officials toured the district, which was one of the hardest-hit areas during Russia’s strikes on Kyiv, and assessed the extent of the damage.

It is noted that the officials paid tribute to those killed during the nighttime shelling on May 24, 2026, by laying flowers at a residential building on Dehtiarivska Street. It was this five-story building that suffered the most damage after being hit by a Russian Kh-101 missile.

“The enemy fired about six missiles—one after another—at the shopping center near the Lukyanivska metro station, where we are now. One missile hit the Kvadrat shopping center, another hit the market. The Russian strike destroyed the buildings, but it did not destroy the tradition; city residents consider the market a symbol of the capital’s resilience. The very next day, vendors came out here, and cafes and other establishments opened,” Kuleba noted.

Currently, the Shevchenkivskyi district remains one of the hardest-hit areas in the capital—since May 24 of this year, over 720 applications for compensation for damaged housing have been submitted through the “e-Recovery” program.

The parties discussed mechanisms for supporting citizens and the need for further infrastructure reconstruction.

During the meeting, Kuleba and Kos discussed the specifics of reforming the railway sector, attracting funding for projects through international technical assistance, for the transport sector, and for the Ukraine Transport Support Fund (UTSF) in particular.

They also discussed the initiative to create a strategic platform—the Recovery Task Force—a forum for cooperation among governments, international experts, urban planners, and investors to shape a long-term vision for Ukraine’s development.

“Ukraine’s recovery could become the most ambitious transformation project in Europe. We are building new systems practically from scratch, and it is important that they be effective from the very beginning. We invite the European Commission to become a key partner in this process,” the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized.

This was reported by the Ministry of Development.

The European Commission does not expect Poland to block Ukraine’s EU accession over the UPA.

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski announced private consultations with Ukraine regarding the possible naming of one of the Special Operations Forces units Heroes of the UPA.” According to him, this issue is being discussed in a diplomatic format.

Warsaw has reacted to the decision to rename the Ukrainian military unit. This concerns an elite unit of the Special Operations Forces, which, according to reports, was named in honor of the Heroes of the UPA. This has sparked a critical reaction in Polish society and political circles.
