A massive fire broke out at a military training ground in Germany

A massive forest fire has broken out in the German town of Ueterbog on the site of a former military training ground. Due to the danger posed by unexploded ordnance, rescue workers are unable to approach the fire. This was reported by Tagesschau.

A massive fire has broken out on the grounds of a former military training area in the city of Jüterbog, located in the German state of Brandenburg. This is being reported by German media, citing emergency response services.

According to rescue workers, the fire began spreading on Friday afternoon and initially covered approximately 2.5 hectares—an area comparable to several football fields. The fire has been classified as a large-scale forest fire, with smoke visible from a great distance. The source of the fire was identified around 2:00 p.m.

The main challenge is that the training ground is contaminated with ammunition. Because of this, firefighters cannot approach the fire directly and are working only from a safe distance. “Due to the presence of ammunition, active firefighting is impossible; emergency services are forced to monitor the situation remotely,” explain the rescue workers.

At various times, up to twelve fire trucks were on site, and overnight crews remained on duty to monitor for possible new flare-ups. Local authorities advised residents of the Teltow-Fleming and Potsdam-Mittelmark districts to close windows and doors and turn off ventilation systems due to the smoke.

According to the fire department, the region remains at high risk for wildfires—nearly the entire territory of Brandenburg is in a high-risk zone. In just one day, about a dozen separate fires were reported in the region, most of which were quickly contained.

In the Netherlands, a large-scale forest fire was brought under control after several days of fighting. The fire broke out at a military training ground and spread rapidly due to the wind.
