Lindsay Clancy's mother testified in court that her daughter had thoughts of harming children

During the trial in Plymouth, Massachusetts, Paul Masgrove’s mother, Lindsay Clancy, stated that her daughter had spoken of thoughts of harming her three children before their deaths. Her testimony came after three weeks of evidence presented by the prosecution, according to The Guardian World.

According to Masgrove, her daughter’s comments and behavior had caused her concern for several months leading up to January 24, 2023. She said that Clancy had asked permission to sleep in her mother’s bed and claimed that the medication prescribed for her postpartum depression was “ruining” her mind.

Masgrove also testified that on one occasion, Clancy approached her and her ex-husband, Patrick Clancy, and said she wanted to tell them something. After that, according to her mother, Clancy stated that she had thoughts about harming the children. Patrick Clancy previously told the court that she had simultaneously assured him she had no plans to harm them.

The defendant’s mother also mentioned a text message from her daughter dated October 20. In it, Clancy wrote that she felt very sick, didn’t know how to get through each day, and that her medication hadn’t helped. Massgrove visited her daughter in Duxbury for a week, and later she and her husband visited her repeatedly from Connecticut. According to her, Clancy’s condition did not improve in November and December: she was losing weight and becoming “paranoid.”

Clancy, 36, is accused of murdering her children—five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson, and eight-month-old Callan. She does not deny that she fatally strangled the children, but she has not pleaded guilty to murder, citing insanity or lack of criminal responsibility under Massachusetts law. The defense argues that her actions were related to postpartum mental disorder, while the prosecution insists the murders were intentional.

Before the defense witnesses began testifying, the prosecution concluded its presentation of evidence. Digital forensics expert Ian Wiffin reported that a few days before the children’s deaths, Clancy had searched the internet for information on the effects of Wellbutrin in treating depression, ketamine for suicidal thoughts, as well as the symptoms of postpartum psychosis and psychosis.
