Matvienko called on the Russian billionaire to repatriate funds from offshore accounts to Russia

Valentina Matvienko, Chairwoman of the Russian Federation Council, has suggested that Alexei Mordashov, a co-owner of Severstal, transfer funds from offshore jurisdictions to Russia.

This was reported by Russian media.

During the meeting, she noted that while the growth of Russian businessmen’s wealth is positive, in the current situation it is worth considering “opportunities” and returning some of the funds to the country. Matvienko also emphasized the importance of “the laws of conscience and patriotism” for major entrepreneurs.

In response, Severstal stated that Mordashov has no offshore assets and that all his assets are located in Russia. The company also emphasized that the businessman and the company are subject to Western sanctions.

Additionally, Severstal stated that the company is operating under crisis conditions but remains one of the region’s key taxpayers and a systemically important enterprise.

Ukraine has imposednew sanctions against Russia.

The European Union may impose sanctions against individuals and companies suspected of facilitating the transport of grain, exported from the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, to the port of Haifa (Israel).

As a reminder, the European Union has expanded sanctions against Belarus as part of a new, 20th package of restrictions targeting Russia and its allies. The decision affects Belarus’s defense sector, as well as entities that, according to the EU, support Russia’s war against Ukraine. For the first time, a Chinese organization linked to Belarusian military production has also been added to the list.
