Shooting in Canada: Families of the victims have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Sam Altman
Seven families of victims of the school shooting in the Canadian town of Tambler Ridge have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman.
This was reported by The Verge.
The plaintiffs allege that OpenAI was negligent because it failed to notify law enforcement about suspicious activity on the ChatGPT service that could have been linked to the planning of the attack.
“Seven families of victims of the school shooting in Tambler Ridge, Canada, have filed lawsuits against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman, accusing the company and its leadership of negligence after they failed to notify the police about the activity of the shooting suspect on ChatGPT,” the report states.
According to media reports, the company considered sharing data on the 18-year-old suspect’s activity with law enforcement. This included her conversations discussing topics related to gun violence. However, ultimately, no such decision was made.
The plaintiffs also claim that OpenAI may have misled the public regarding the suspension of the suspect’s account. According to them, the profile was merely deactivated, after which she was able to create a new one using a different email address.
Additionally, the lawsuits state that the GPT-4o model was “defective” and could have contributed to the development of dangerous behavior. The plaintiffs note that the company had previously withdrawn one of the model’s updates due to its excessive compliance with user requests.
Among the main charges are wrongful death, negligence, and aiding and abetting a mass shooting
The issue of tech companies’ liability for the use of their products in illegal activities remains a subject of debate in the U.S. and Canada.
Previously, OpenAI announced the implementation of restrictions to prevent the use of artificial intelligence for violent or illegal purposes. At the same time, such cases continue to spark new legal and ethical controversies.
Additionally, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is accused of systematically lying about the safety of artificial intelligence and his own expertise. According to insiders, Altman lacks the necessary programming skills and misunderstands the fundamental principles of AI, which calls into question his status as a technology leader.
