Medvedev threatened to strike Berlin
Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, threatened Germany with strikes after German authorities claimed that Russians were involved in the attack on Leipzig Airport. He stated that Germany allegedly “deserves” strikes on military facilities and did not rule out attacks on specific targets in Berlin.
Dmitry Medvedev responded to Germany’s statements regarding the Russian attack on Leipzig Airport with threats against the country.
Earlier, German authorities officially stated that Russian forces were involved in the incident at the Leipzig airport. Russia denies these accusations and calls them fabricated. Medvedev stated that, in his opinion, the response to such accusations should be strikes against Germany. “They deserve a direct strike on all German military equipment production facilities for the Bandera clique. And quite possibly, on some other locations in Berlin as well,” Medvedev wrote.
Thus, the Russian official explicitly mentioned the possibility of strikes on the territory of the German capital. Medvedev, however, called Berlin’s accusations “a complete fabrication” and “a myth.” He provided no evidence to support his claims. Separately, he threatened European politicians whom Moscow considers “sponsors of terrorism.”
This refers, in particular, to European leaders who travel to Ukraine by train. Medvedev hinted that such trips could be dangerous. His statement was yet another public threat by a Russian official directed at European countries. Medvedev regularly makes statements about possible strikes against Ukraine and Western countries that support Kyiv.
In this case, his remarks were prompted by Germany’s allegations of Russian involvement in the attack on Leipzig Airport. Germany and other European countries have continued to support Ukraine since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion. Moscow, meanwhile, has repeatedly threatened Western nations over their military and political aid to Kyiv.
Medvedev’s statements remain mere threats for now. They do not mean that Russia has already decided on a specific strike against Germany or Berlin. This is according to Russian media reports.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova threatened Germany with retaliation following Berlin’s decision to close the Russian Consulate General in Bonn and the “Russian House” in Berlin. She stated that Moscow allegedly had not received convincing evidence of Russia’s involvement in the hybrid attack that prompted Germany to take these steps.
