Meloni called for Putin not to be invited to the G20 summit

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has publicly criticized the U.S. administration’s initiative to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to the upcoming G20 summit in Miami.

The head of the Italian government emphasized that there are currently no grounds for such diplomatic gestures toward the Kremlin.

Speaking to the press on the eve of an informal meeting of EU leaders in Cyprus, Meloni clearly outlined Rome’s position.

In her view, the current geopolitical situation requires the West to remain firm, rather than making premature attempts to normalize relations.

The Italian leader noted that Washington’s previous attempts to establish dialogue had not yielded the desired results.

She emphasized that unilateral concessions by the White House were not reciprocated by the Russian leadership.

Meloni’s position is based on the principle of reciprocity in international politics.

She believes that the U.S. president and his administration must change their strategy for engaging with Moscow, given the lack of a constructive response from the aggressor.

The Prime Minister’s direct remarks underscore the seriousness of her concern regarding the current course of American diplomacy.

“As for Putin at the G20 summit, I believe that right now we should ask Putin to take a few steps toward us, rather than taking them ourselves,” stated Giorgia Meloni.
