Italy to radically change rules on payments for migrant repatriation — Reuters

The Italian government has issued a new decree revising the rules governing financial payments for assistance with the repatriation of migrants, following criticism from the opposition.

This was reported by Reuters.

Previously, it was stipulated that lawyers would receive state compensation only if the process of returning migrants was successfully completed. Approximately €1.2 billion was planned to be allocated for these payments through 2028.

Under the new rules, payments of approximately €615 will be made not only to lawyers but also to other professionals involved in the process. Additionally, compensation will be paid even in cases where repatriation is incomplete.

The decision was made after the initial scheme drew concerns, particularly from President Sergio Mattarella, as well as criticism from legal organizations.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni explained that the changes were introduced via a separate decree to avoid delaying the adoption of a broader package of security measures, which had a limited timeframe.

In 2025, the number of immigrants in the European Union reached a record 64.2 million people, which is nearly 60% more than 15 years ago.

The Netherlands is considering increasing pressure on municipalities due to a shortage of housing for refugees. Asylum Minister Bart van den Brink stated that the government is prepared to take coercive measures against communities that refuse to create additional housing for asylum seekers.
