In Jamaica, divers are restoring coral reefs using underwater speakers — The Guardian

On Jamaica’s northern coast, divers are using an unusual method to restore coral reefs—installing underwater speakers that play the sounds of a “healthy” ocean.

This is reported by The Guardian.

Experts explain that living reefs create a constant background of sound—the clicking of shrimp, the sounds of fish, and the movement of water. In contrast, degraded reefs become almost silent.

Since marine organisms rely on sound to find their habitat, scientists decided to recreate a natural “acoustic ecosystem” to attract fish and stimulate reef restoration.

As part of the project, waterproof speakers are installed on the ocean floor, which play recordings of a healthy reef for up to 14 hours a day. The systems are powered by solar panels on the water’s surface.

The idea was initiated by Italian artist Marco Barotti, who was inspired by research on the role of sound in ecosystems.

Environmentalists note that this approach could be an effective complement to traditional methods of marine conservation.

As a reminder, an ice storm is threatening about 100 million people in the U.S.

California has also been hit by a severe storm, and there is a threat of tornadoes.
