Sea routes and anniversary of the attacks

The sides also discussed the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea. According to the German government representative, Merz and Trump agreed that both waterways must be opened as soon as possible.

In addition, the leaders mentioned the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States, the 25th anniversary of which was marked last week. Merz emphasized the special relationship between Germany and the United States.

The telephone conversation was initially planned for a week earlier to mark the anniversary of the September 11 attacks, but the German government canceled it without explaining the reasons and postponed it. Before that, Trump spoke favorably about the electoral success of the far-right Alternative for Germany party in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt, which caused outrage in the German government.
