Merz after speaking with Trump: There is currently no alternative to NATO
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that there is currently no alternative to NATO, and that the alliance must be preserved and strengthened.
He made this remark following a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to Merz, during the conversation, the parties discussed the future of NATO, but the issues of withdrawing American troops from Germany or restricting the use of military infrastructure were not raised.
“There is currently no substitute for this alliance, and therefore I am very interested in preserving and further developing it together with the U.S. president,” the chancellor emphasized.
He also noted that he had proposed discussing NATO’s future separately ahead of the alliance’s summit, scheduled to take place in early June in Ankara.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that the issue of Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance will not be resolved in the near future. Even despite active negotiations and Ukraine’s aspirations, a quick accession should not be expected.
British Defense Minister John Healey is convinced that the United States remains a reliable partner and “fully committed to NATO.”
