Ghanaian minister proposes cutting Accra road closure to 6–9 months
Ghana’s Minister for Works and Housing, Ahmed Ibrahim, has called for a review of the planned one-year closure of a section of the Winneba–Accra road in the Kaneshie area of Accra. He proposed reducing the period to six to nine months if possible, MyJoyOnline reports.
Closure planned for next week
The section concerned is approximately 1.5 kilometres long, from the Kaneshie interchange to Accra Academy. The temporary closure is expected to begin next week so that contractors can carry out critical engineering work on this section.
During an inspection of the project site, Ibrahim said the work was necessary, but the possible consequences should be fully assessed before it begins. According to him, closing one of Accra’s busiest transport corridors for 12 months could cause significant congestion and inconvenience for passengers, businesses and motorists who use this route daily.

Coordination between agencies
The minister stressed that the decision should not remain within the remit of just one agency. According to him, the Ministry of Roads and Highways, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of National Security and the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council should join efforts to agree on measures to reduce the effects of the closure.
Ibrahim also noted that proper preparation must be ensured before work begins so that the closure does not worsen congestion in the capital. The planned engineering work is intended to improve the condition of the road section in Kaneshie. At the same time, authorities have not yet announced detailed traffic diversion arrangements for the construction period.
