Poland's Defense Minister Accused the Opposition of Changing Its Stance on Ukraine

Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated during a speech in the Sejm on July 31 that the opposition had allegedly begun to view Ukraine as an enemy instead of Russia. He made this statement in the context of a discussion about the incident involving a Russian missile.

Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that one should not forget who is truly responsible for the threat to Poland’s and NATO’s security, and lashed out at opposition lawmakers.

“You don’t consider the Russian Federation an enemy at all… Recently, Ukraine has become enemy number one,” he said from the podium.

In this context, the defense minister recalled the controversial remarks made by Przemysław Czarnek, the Law and Justice (PiS) party’s candidate for prime minister, regarding the suspension of aid to Kyiv.

“Even Kaczyński (Jarosław, leader of PiS. — Ed.) noticed this, so let Mr. Czarnek have no complaints against me. It was the party chairman who reassured you, because he’s apparently the only one in your entire camp who understands this situation,” said Kosiniak-Kamysz.

He then touched on the topic of Poland’s transfer of missiles for the Patriot systems to Ukraine. “At the request of the United States, we transferred them. Are you already against the United States as well?” he asked.

“They (the Ukrainians) can shoot down missiles flying toward Poland while they’re still over Ukrainian territory. I’d prefer that they shoot them down over Ukrainian territory,” he added, drawing a round of applause from the government representatives in the chamber.

The minister added that despite the opposition’s “howling and disinformation,” the government will continue to provide aid to Ukraine.

“The more missiles are shot down over Ukrainian territory, the less of a threat there is to Poland,” he stated.
