Iran's new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has not appeared in public for more than five months since taking office, sparking numerous speculations about his whereabouts and health. Among the theories being discussed by Western and Israeli sources are that he is in an underground bunker, has fled to Russia, or is in critical condition after sustaining injuries.
The Daily Mail reports this, citing sources in intelligence agencies. According to the publication, Mojtaba Khamenei took the helm of Iran following the death of his father, Ali Khamenei, as a result of U.S. and Israeli missile strikes in late February. Since then, the new Supreme Leader has not appeared in public, has not recorded any video or audio messages, and his statements have been disseminated only in writing through government officials.
A former employee of the Israeli intelligence agency “Mossad,” who currently works at the Jerusalem Center for Security and Foreign Policy (JCFA), stated that Mojtaba Khamenei’s absence even from his father’s funeral could indicate his inability to participate in public events.
According to the publication, the main theories regarding the Iranian leader’s whereabouts include his being in a well-protected underground bunker, a possible trip to Russia, or a serious condition following injuries he allegedly sustained during an airstrike. At the same time, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated in July that Khamenei is “on the mend.”
Some sources also suggest that actual control of the country currently lies in the hands of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) command, and that statements on behalf of the Supreme Leader may be prepared by representatives of the military leadership.
However, none of these theories has been independently confirmed. Iranian authorities have not disclosed Mojtaba Khamenei’s whereabouts, citing security concerns as the reason for his absence.
