A Russian Orthodox Metropolitan was released following a high-profile arrest in the Czech Republic

In the Czech Republic, police released Metropolitan Hilarion of the Russian Orthodox Church and his driver after detaining them in Karlovy Vary without pressing charges. Nevertheless, the investigation is ongoing, as forensic analysis confirmed the presence of a banned substance in the car. This was reported on the church leader’s Telegram channel.

In the Czech Republic, the story of the detention of Metropolitan Hilarion of the Russian Orthodox Church, who was stopped in Karlovy Vary on suspicion of possessing prohibited substances, unexpectedly unfolded peacefully, as after conducting checks, the police released him along with his driver without charging them with any offenses and without imposing any procedural restrictions.

The Czech police did not impose any preventive measures, did not set bail, and did not impose any travel restrictions, which immediately eased the tension surrounding the incident, although the official investigation has not been closed. A statement released through church channels notes that “no charges were filed,” and the metropolitan and his driver were released immediately after the checks were completed.

At the same time, the situation does not appear to be definitively closed, as the forensic analysis, according to the Czech side, confirmed that the substance found in the car is a controlled substance, so investigators will continue their work to establish all the circumstances.

Ilarion himself, through his press service, states that he completely denies any involvement in the storage or transportation of prohibited substances, insisting on his innocence. In fact, the incident has left open questions: the detention was high-profile but quickly concluded without charges, yet the legal matter has not yet been resolved.

The Czech Republic is considering the sale of Explosia, a state-owned manufacturer of explosives and ammunition, and the proceeds could be directed toward defense investments.
