EU naval forces detained a tanker belonging to the Russian shadow fleet

The naval forces of the EU’s EUNAVFOR MED IRINI operation have detained the oil tanker MV South Star, which is suspected of sailing under a false flag in violation of international maritime law. This was reported by EU Foreign Affairs Chief Kaja Kallas.

According to her, the European Union is stepping up pressure on Russia’s “shadow fleet” and reinforcing sanctions with concrete actions at sea. In addition, EU member states have authorized the EUNAVFOR ATALANTA operation to begin conducting flag inspections on vessels involved in the transport of Russian oil.

On June 1, France detained the Tagor, a tanker belonging to Russia’s shadow fleet, in the Atlantic.

The European Union is considering adding about 20 additional tankers from Russia’s shadow fleet to future restrictive measures aimed at reducing Moscow’s oil revenues. New sanctions are also planned to be extended to vessels transporting liquefied natural gas to prevent the Kremlin from creating a similar shadow fleet for LNG.
