Hungary’s potential ties with Russia undermine EU security, says Tsakhkna

New journalistic investigations into contacts between Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov have caused serious concern within the European Union.

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna reported this on social media.

Certain political moves by Hungary and Slovakia may serve Moscow’s interests, he noted.

“New evidence reveals direct coordination between Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, demonstrating how Hungary and Slovakia are acting in the Kremlin’s interests. This undermines our security, the unity of the EU, and the measures we are taking to hold Russia accountable for its aggression,” Tsakhkna said.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó reacted to the publication of recordings of his telephone conversations with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, ironically calling it “yet another great revelation.”

As a reminder, the publication VSquare obtained recordings of a conversation between Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó and Sergey Lavrov. During the conversation, strategic information regarding critical EU issues was provided to Russia.
