Voting begins in Alaska’s Fat Bear Week contest — Asharq Al-Awsat

Online voting has begun in the annual Fat Bear Week contest at Katmai National Park in Alaska, United States, where users choose the brown bear that has most successfully gained weight ahead of winter hibernation. This was reported by Asharq Al-Awsat.

Competition among bears

The contest takes the form of head-to-head matchups: participants vote for the bear that, in their view, best demonstrates successful fat accumulation. The winner of each pairing advances to the next round, and the Fat Bear Week champion is selected at the end.

The animals’ lives can be followed through live streams from the Brooks River, where the bears catch salmon. The organizers also publish biographies of the contenders and photographs showing how they changed over the summer.

Preparing for winter hibernation

Summer and early autumn are a key period for brown bears, which feed actively before wintering. During approximately five months of hibernation, they do not eat and survive on accumulated fat reserves.

Last year, the contest was won by a bear nicknamed Chunk, who beat two-time winner Grazer. Fat Bear Week was launched in 2014, when only a few thousand people took part in the voting. Now, more than one million users cast their votes each year. The initiative aims to draw attention to brown bears, their habitat in Alaska, and risks associated with human activity.
