In Cyprus, hunters' association alleges harassment by activists
In Cyprus, a hunters' association has alleged that hunters acting lawfully are being harassed by activists, individuals and organised groups during hunts. According to the organisation, such actions create “unnecessary tension” that could threaten the safety of participants, Cyprus Mail reports.
Hunters' statement
The association says it has for years documented, condemned and highlighted the problem of harassment of lawful hunters. The organisation condemned actions aimed at obstructing hunting, stating that they do not contribute to public calm and mutual respect.
Representatives of the association stressed that the requirement to comply with legislation must apply to everyone. According to them, hunters are obliged to strictly observe the law and safety rules, but they also have the right to engage in permitted activities without intimidation, obstruction or harassment.

Position on illegal hunting
At the same time, the association said it unequivocally condemns poaching and other illegal forms of hunting. It also supported the effective enforcement of legislation by competent authorities.
The statement was released after comments by ELAM party MP and chair of the parliamentary environment committee Linos Papayiannis. On Monday, he said he would not invite anti-hunting activists to a future discussion in the committee because, in his words, their behaviour had gone beyond acceptable limits. In response, activists called on MPs to strengthen environmental measures and the protection of wildlife, and not to yield to what they described as attempts to disrupt cooperation between non-governmental organisations, the police and state bodies.
