Third vulture chick of the year ringed in Cyprus
Cyprus has successfully ringed the third vulture chick born this year. Authorities called this another step in efforts to conserve the species, which is threatened with extinction.

Chick rescued thanks to GPS
GPS tracking also helped locate and rescue the first vulture chick to hatch in Cyprus this year. During its first flight, it became trapped in dense vegetation on the territory of the British bases.

The young bird was found and rescued by the Game and Fauna Service in cooperation with the environmental department of the British bases and BirdLife Cyprus.
Bird is being prepared for release
The rescued chick is currently at the Wildlife Care and Rehabilitation Centre. It will be released when it is ready.
As authorities noted, GPS transmitters allow conservation teams to monitor young vultures, identify cases in which birds may be in danger, and better understand the risks during the early stages of their lives. Continued monitoring and cooperation among the organizations involved, authorities assess, remain important for restoring the vulture population in Cyprus.
