Conservation begins at Panayia Melandrína Church and Kato Arodes Mosque in Cyprus — Cyprus Mail

In Cyprus, the bi-communal Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage has begun conservation work at Panayia Melandrína Church in the Kyrenia district and at Kato Arodes Mosque in the Paphos district. Cyprus Mail reports.

Work at a 15th-century church

According to the Greek Cypriot co-chair of the committee, Sotos Ktoris, Panayia Melandrína Church dates back to the 15th century. Emergency work was carried out there in 2014 to prevent the monument from collapsing.

Ktoris noted that the temporary interventions carried out at the time have reached their limit after 12 years. A comprehensive architectural study has been prepared for the church. The new work is intended to restore the structural integrity of the building and ensure its long-term protection.

EU funding and UNDP support

Conservation work at Kato Arodes Mosque has also begun. Both projects are funded by the European Union and implemented under the leadership of the United Nations Development Programme.

Separately, Ktoris reported the completion of conservation work at the Ayios Georgios Church in Vokolida on the Karpas Peninsula, as well as at the community cemetery. This project received financial support from the EU and the community, while technical supervision was provided by the UNDP. According to Ktoris, the completed projects preserve the island’s memory and cultural heritage and underscore the importance of cooperation between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.
