59 cartons of cigarettes seized at crossing points in Cyprus — Cyprus Mail

Cyprus customs seized 59 cartons of cigarettes at the Agios Dometios and Deryneia crossing points over two days. This was reported by Cyprus Mail, citing the country’s customs department.

Inspection at Agios Dometios

On Sunday, customs officers stopped a taxi at Agios Dometios carrying five Israeli citizens. During the inspection, they found 49 cartons of cigarettes, each containing 200 cigarettes.

The tobacco products did not have the required health warnings, security features or tracking code. The cigarettes were seized for destruction. The people involved were arrested but later released after agreeing to an out-of-court settlement of the case by paying €4,000.

Another 10 cartons in Deryneia

On Monday, customs officers stopped a taxi in Deryneia carrying a 49-year-old Israeli citizen. Ten cartons of unmarked cigarettes were found in her luggage.

The tobacco products were also seized. The woman was released after agreeing to pay €600 to settle the case.
