Man detained in Cyprus after wife’s death in Yerolakkos
In the occupied north of Cyprus, police detained a man following the death of his 35-year-old wife in the Yerolakkos area. According to Cyprus Mail, the woman died on Saturday afternoon after a domestic dispute.
Details of the incident
Turkish Cypriot media reported that the couple were travelling from Morphou to Nicosia near the Yerolakkos industrial zone when a verbal argument broke out between them. The car then left the road and travelled about 110 metres across a field.
According to those media outlets, the man allegedly struck his wife on the head with an electric cutting tool that was in the car. Police said that after his detention, the suspect gave a statement in which he admitted to hitting his wife with his hands and the tool.

An application was filed to keep the man in custody in order to continue the investigation and conduct a forensic examination. Neither the prosecution nor the defence objected to this.
Reaction to the case
Cyprus Mail described this as the second case of femicide in five days in the occupied north of Cyprus. On Monday, a 61-year-old woman died from stab wounds near her home in the village of Ayios Georgios in Karpasia, near Trikomo. Her 71-year-old former husband was named as the suspect in that case.
According to the publication, he attempted to take his own life after the incident and remains in hospital under guard. The latest case was commented on by Turkish Cypriot Nicosia mayor Mehmet Harmanci and opposition leader Sila Usar Incirli. The Kayad Women’s Support Association also again called for the introduction of a law to combat domestic violence.
