An Israeli man has been detained in Cyprus in connection with a case involving the illegal transport of embryos

In the Turkish-controlled part of Northern Cyprus, law enforcement officials detained an Israeli citizen suspected of involvement in the illegal trade of embryos.

According to kibrispostasi.com, the 24-year-old man was detained on May 19 at Ercan Airport while attempting to fly to Mexico via Istanbul. A container labeled “Life Parcel” was found in his possession, containing four embryos. As part of the investigation, two Turkish citizens linked to a local clinic were also detained. The court extended their detention to allow for further investigative actions.

All three are suspected of attempting to smuggle the embryos out of the Turkish part of Cyprus without the necessary permits.

They were brought before a court, which extended their detention for 24 hours to allow for further investigation, the collection of testimony, and the review of surveillance camera footage.

The Cyprus Mail reports that, according to police, the embryos were obtained from an IVF center that was operating without a license.
