Floods and landslides on Nepal-China border kill 1,428 people
As a result of flash floods and landslides on the border between Nepal and China, 1,428 people have died, while another 5,649 are considered missing. Search operations have continued for more than two weeks after the disaster, Anadolu Agency reports.
Losses in Nepal and Tibet
Nepal has confirmed the deaths of 1,385 people, while 5,130 people are still being sought, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said. In China’s Xizang Autonomous Region, also known as Tibet, the death toll stands at 43, with another 519 people missing.
Among those missing are 848 foreigners: 587 people are being sought in Nepal and 261 in Tibet.

How the disaster occurred
The disaster occurred on August 26 after a crack formed in a glacier on Mount Langtang Lirung in Nepal at an altitude of about 5,200 meters. This triggered an avalanche of ice and rocks that turned into a large-scale debris flow and moved through valleys along the border.
Floods and landslides caused destruction in Nepal’s Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and Kavre districts, as well as in the Kathmandu Valley. In Tibet, the disaster buried the Gyirong border crossing.
