Peruvian writer and journalist Álvaro Vargas Llosa has accepted an offer to take up the post of Peru’s ambassador to the United States. Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori confirmed that he agreed to the nomination, but the constitutional and legal procedures required in both countries must be completed before he officially takes office.

Candidate’s statement

In a statement on social media platform X, Vargas Llosa said that if the appointment is ratified, he will use his experience, knowledge and efforts to carry out the mission entrusted to him. He said he would seek to defend Peru’s “permanent interests” and promote a new stage in relations between Peru and the United States.

The writer also said that he would not make any further public statements regarding the appointment until the procedure is formally completed. According to Anadolu Agency, Fujimori believes that his experience will help strengthen Peru’s ties with Washington.

Security cooperation

Vargas Llosa’s nomination comes amid plans by Peru and the United States to deepen cooperation in security and the fight against organized crime. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Lima this week as part of a Latin American tour focused on security, migration and regional cooperation.

During the visit, Peru announced that it was joining the US-led Shield of the Americas initiative. It provides for stronger cooperation in combating drug trafficking and transnational organized crime. Vargas Llosa had previously expressed support for Fujimori and her political movement.
