Narayan says Britain’s role in AI safety has not weakened — Politico Europe
UK Artificial Intelligence Minister Kanishka Narayan said at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool that the country’s ability to play a leading role in global AI safety has not been weakened by US President Donald Trump’s administration’s approach to the technology. Politico Europe reports.
Access to models before launch
Last week, Trump said during the UN General Assembly that the United States would reject attempts to introduce global regulation of artificial intelligence. Politico also reported that the White House instructed OpenAI and Anthropic not to provide their models to the UK AI Safety Institute until they had been tested by US specialists.

Narayan said it does not matter to the United Kingdom if the US side tests the models first, provided that the UK AI Safety Institute gets access to them before their launch for broad use. According to him, the institute not only tests models for the safety of the British public but also shares its findings with the US side.
Plans for G20 standards
Last week, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced in a speech at the UN General Assembly that the country would use its G20 presidency next year to promote the development of global standards in artificial intelligence. Narayan said the United Kingdom has the capacity and trust to mediate a broader international conversation on AI.
