The French National Assembly has approved a bill on assisted suicide for the third time — BFMTV

On the evening of June 30, the French National Assembly voted for the third time in favor of a bill legalizing assisted suicide, despite the Senate’s previous rejection of the initiative.

A total of 295 deputies voted in favor of the bill—one of President Emmanuel Macron’s key campaign promises—while 232 parliamentarians voted against it.

The bill will now be sent back to the upper house of parliament for consideration. It is expected that during the vote on July 7, the Senate will once again block this initiative, as it has done previously.

However, the French government intends to use special mechanisms to ensure that the National Assembly has the “final say” during the final vote, scheduled for July 15.

Discussions on this issue have been ongoing since May 2, 2022, when the bill underwent its first reading.

Over this extended period, numerous amendments have been made to the bill, significantly altering its content and criteria for application.

Ultimately, the final version of the law provides for the legalization of both assisted suicide and euthanasia.

The latter option will be available in cases where a patient who expresses such a wish is physically unable to perform the procedure on their own.

Lawmakers have clearly defined the mandatory criteria under which a person may exercise this right.

First, the patient must be in a severe and incurable condition that is close to the terminal stage.

It is also necessary that the illness cause unbearable physical or psychological suffering, and that standard treatment be ineffective or, in itself, cause additional pain.
