Suspects in attacks on the homes of government officials have been detained in Greece
Greek law enforcement officials have detained three people suspected of involvement in attacks using incendiary bombs on the homes of members of the ruling New Democracy party. The incidents occurred earlier this month in Thessaloniki and resulted in fatalities.
According to Greek law enforcement officials, the arrests were made during counterterrorism operations in Thessaloniki and on the southern island of Crete; the investigation is ongoing.
As a result of the July 1 attacks, which involved homemade explosive devices made from camping gas cylinders, one person was killed and three were injured.
Authorities reported that a 26-year-old woman was arrested in the Cretan city of Chania. Police described her as having ties to the Greek anarchist movement and stated that she likely traveled to Crete in an attempt to evade investigators.
In this northern city, a 29-year-old man was arrested, whom police also described as a prominent figure in Thessaloniki’s anarchist circles. Police reported that he had previously been detained for questioning in 2015 and again earlier this year.
Investigators believe the two suspects are involved in the third of three attacks carried out that morning, which resulted in the death of Vagia Nestora, the mother of New Democracy parliamentary candidate Aphrodite Nestora.
