The process of exchanging driver's licenses has been simplified for Ukrainians in Germany
Ukrainians residing in Germany will be able to exchange their driver’s licenses for German ones without having to take the written or driving tests. This decision was adopted by the German Bundesrat.
The new rules are intended to make life easier for Ukrainian refugees and speed up the document exchange process. In addition, Ukrainian will be added to the list of languages available for the written exam for those who still need to take it.
The German Bundesrat has approved changes to the rules regarding driver’s licenses. Ukraine and Montenegro have been added to the list of countries whose licenses can be exchanged for German ones without additional testing of knowledge and skills. Previously, drivers from certain countries had to pass both a written and a practical exam before receiving a German license. Now, this requirement has been waived for Ukrainians.
The decision was adopted during the 1,067th plenary session of the Bundesrat. In addition to simplifying the license exchange process, Germany has also expanded the list of languages in which the theory exam can be taken. Ukrainian and Kurmanji—one of the dialects of the Kurdish language—have been added to the list. This means that Ukrainians who, under certain circumstances, still need to take the written test will be able to do so in their native language.
In addition to Ukrainian licenses, the changes will also apply to drivers who hold licenses from third countries but have already exchanged them for licenses from another European Union member state. Such licenses will also be recognized in Germany. Furthermore, the new rules will allow optometrists to conduct vision tests for truck and bus drivers. Previously, such tests could only be performed by certain authorized institutions.
As a result, the process of obtaining a local driver’s license in Germany will become significantly simpler for Ukrainians. The new rules are intended to reduce bureaucracy and facilitate the integration of Ukrainians living and working in the country. This information comes from the official summary of the 1,067th plenary session of the German Bundesrat.
