A jellyfish swarm shut down three reactors at France's largest nuclear power plant
A massive influx of jellyfish into the cooling system of the French nuclear power plant in Gravelines forced the operator, EDF, to shut down three of its six reactors.
Reactors No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 were completely shut down, and the output of the fourth unit—No. 1—was reduced to 50%. Another reactor is undergoing scheduled maintenance, so only the sixth reactor is currently operating at full capacity.
The jellyfish entered the seawater intake systems used to cool the reactors and blocked the filtration equipment.
EDF has assured that the situation poses no threat to the safety of the plant, its personnel, or the environment. The company is already cleaning the systems and taking steps to restore the power units’ operation as quickly as possible.

Ukrainian rescue workers, who are helping their French colleagues fight large-scale wildfires, rescued a small roe deer. The animal was found in the middle of a burned-out forest with scorched legs. Firefighters provided first aid and handed it over to local volunteers.
Forest fires in southern France have not only destroyed homes but also led to the discovery of an old cache of ammunition. In the municipality of Le Porge, about 400 shells and other ammunition from World War II were found. Some of them exploded right during the fire due to the high temperatures.
