Turkey and Bulgaria have agreed to work together to combat illegal migration
During talks in Sofia, the interior ministers of Turkey and Bulgaria, Mustafa Çiftçi and Ivan Demerdzhiev, agreed to expand cooperation in the management of their shared border, combating illegal migration, human trafficking, and drug trafficking. The importance of this land border section has increased following Bulgaria’s full accession to the Schengen Area.
According to the Turkish official, trilateral cooperation between Turkey, Bulgaria, and Greece has already reduced the level of illegal migration in the region by 97%. The parties also agreed to jointly combat organized crime, and Turkey will assist Bulgaria in identifying and repatriating assets stolen through corruption and transferred abroad. In addition, the police academies of both countries signed a memorandum of cooperation in the field of personnel training.
