Navrotsky acknowledged that historical disputes with Zelenskyy remain unresolved

Polish President Karol Nawrocki announced on July 8 that during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the NATO summit, the two sides were unable to reach an understanding on historical issues. At the same time, the Polish leader described the talks as constructive and emphasized the importance of continuing the dialogue between Warsaw and Kyiv.

According to the Polish leader, the talks with Volodymyr Zelenskyy lasted about an hour. During the meeting, the parties discussed a wide range of issues related to bilateral relations and future cooperation.

Navrotsky noted that, despite the recent tensions in relations between the two countries, Poland and Ukraine must maintain a constant dialogue. He also emphasized that both countries share the same assessment of the main threat to their independence, which remains Russia.

At the same time, the Polish president acknowledged that during the talks, the parties were unable to reach an understanding on historical issues. “We were unable to resolve historical issues at this meeting,” he said.

Navrotsky emphasized that issues related to the UPA and the symbols of Stepan Bandera remain matters of principle for him. “The feelings of Polish women and men regarding the crimes, the Volhynia tragedy, and the genocide are not subject to negotiation,” the Polish president stated.

According to him, Warsaw expects understanding from Kyiv. Navrotsky also expressed the view that Bandera’s symbols carry negative associations and, in his opinion, limit Ukraine’s European future.

Despite this, the Polish president gave a positive assessment of the results of his meeting with Zelenskyy. He stated that the talks were constructive, and the parties reaffirmed their positions and discussed prospects for further cooperation.

As a reminder, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sent the Order of the White Eagle to Poland via “Nova Poshta.”

The decision to revoke Poland’s highest state award, the Order of the White Eagle, from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is not a unilateral act by the president. Under Polish procedure, the president may initiate the revocation of an award, but the corresponding act requires the countersignature (co-signature) of the Polish prime minister.
In response to the Polish president’s actions, Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga stated that he would return his state award to Poland.

Dnipro Mayor Boris Filatov reacted to Polish President Karol Nawrocki’s decision to revoke Poland’s highest state award, the Order of the White Eagle, from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He called the Polish leader a liar and a manipulator.

Oleg Tyahnybok, leader of the All-Ukrainian Union “Svoboda,” recalled the events in the village of Sahryn—now a village in the Lublin Voivodeship of Poland—where between 600 and 1,240 Ukrainians were killed and tortured in March 1944.
