Nepal needs technical assistance after glacier collapse

Nepal needs international assistance in specialized technical fields following a massive flood on the Himalayan border with China, but is not requesting foreign aid for search-and-rescue operations. Nepal's foreign minister told Reuters this, The Hindu International reports.

According to Nepal's top diplomat, the country needs support in technical areas where it lacks the necessary expertise. At the same time, Nepal plans to conduct search-and-rescue operations independently.

On August 28, Nepal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the country is currently capable of handling the rescue operation independently and is declining foreign involvement in these efforts.

Consequences of the glacier collapse

The glacier collapse on Wednesday, August 26, caused a powerful flow of rocks, ice, mud and debris through Himalayan mountain river systems. The disaster occurred on Nepal's Himalayan border with China.
