Kinnock sees no Labour cooperation with Plaid Cymru — Politico Europe

Welsh Secretary Stephen Kinnock in Liverpool, United Kingdom, said that the Labour Party would face difficulties cooperating with the Welsh nationalist party Plaid Cymru after the next general election if no political force secures a convincing victory. Politico Europe reports.

Labour’s position

Speaking at the Politico Pub event during the Labour Party conference, Kinnock said he could see no circumstances in which it would be possible to work meaningfully with a party seeking the break-up of the United Kingdom.

At the same time, the minister noted that representatives of the centre-left Plaid Cymru, in his view, want the best for Wales. However, he criticised the party after it took control of the Welsh parliament — the Senedd — from Labour in May. The Labour Party had led the Welsh government for 27 years.

The question of independence

Kinnock also said that Plaid Cymru had returned to its usual course. He linked this to a meeting between party leader Rhun ap Iorwerth, Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney, and Sinn Féin vice president Michelle O’Neill, where closer cooperation to achieve independence was discussed earlier this month.

According to polls conducted after Andy Burnham became prime minister in July, no party currently has prospects of winning an outright majority in the next election. Kinnock suggested that Plaid Cymru’s demands in exchange for support in the House of Commons could make an agreement impossible if its condition were support for nationalism, separatism and the break-up of the United Kingdom.
