Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his inner circle were taken aback by U.S. President Donald Trump’s abrupt statement calling for an end to the strikes on Lebanon.
This was reported by Axios.
According to sources, after the ceasefire was reached, Israel retained the right to use force in self-defense, but Trump publicly stated that “Israel will no longer bomb Lebanon” because “the U.S. has banned it.”
In an interview with the publication, he also emphasized: “Israel must stop. They cannot continue to blow up buildings. I will not allow this.”
Axios’s sources note that this stance caused concern among Israeli leadership, as it contradicts previous agreements regarding the terms of the ceasefire.
Israel agreed to a 10-day ceasefire with Lebanon and announced the start of a move toward a diplomatic settlement, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stressed that the war against “Hezbollah” is not yet over and military operations will continue.
